Bronze Medallion Course Information:

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is recognised as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. This award also increases employment opportunities with many pools and aquatic centres as they require employees who conduct aquatic programs to have their Bronze Medallion.

This course will enhance participants personal survival skills while providing them with the knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgement, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues.

Minimum age requirement is 14 years and participants should possess medium to advanced levels of aquatic fitness and skill.

The Bronze Medallion's most challenging components include a 400m swim to be completed within 13 minutes, and a 50m swim followed by 50m tow to be completed in under 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

This course requires practical application of Resuscitation that will require kneeling on the floor and a range of practical scenarios with candidates on the floor.

Candidates need to successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions in order to achieve a Statement of Attainment.

The Bronze Medallion course offers nationally recognised certification and participants may be eligible for accreditation in:

  • SISCAQU002 Perform Basic Water Rescues

  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion Award needs to be renewed every 12 months, within 3 months of expiry otherwise a full course must be completed again.

Real Life Story - Bronze Medallion helps one lifesaver

A teenage girl has saved a boy who fell into the water whilst fishing. The boy who was fishing with his father off a jetty, fell in and his father dived in after him to try and rescue him. Seeing both males in trouble, the girl jumped in and was urged by the father to save his son. She managed to get the younger boy to safety but the boy’s father tragically drowned. The teenager credits the Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion course with giving her the skills and knowledge to perform the rescue, along with her Mum for encouraging her to enrol.
